Creswell and Langwith Miners, Mansfield (1900)
Grimy miners head home at the end of their shift in the days before pithead baths.
Overview
Scenes from the pithead as the miners depart after their shift. Creswell Colliery was active from 1897 and a model village was built for the miners, with houses, a co-operative store, a miners' institute, a recreation area and a bandstand. The colliery closed in 1991. Nearby Langwith Colliery was active from 1876 to 1978. It's not clear which of the two mines is shown in this film.
Both Creswell and Langwith are in Derbyshire, while Mansfield is in Nottinghamshire. However the two villages - and their pits - lie close to the Nottinghamshire border, so it may be that Mitchell & Kenyon shot these images during a visit to Mansfield.
