Employees Leaving Gilroy's Jute Works, Dundee (1901)

Employees race out of a Jute works in Edwardian Dundee.

Non-Fiction 1901 3 mins Silent

Overview

The large entrance and courtyard are all that's visible of this Jute works as a mass of boys run ahead of a dense crowd of men and women. It's interesting how much the headwear on show reveals the employees' social standing. Half of the women wear smart boaters, usually with a coat or jacket, while others cover their heads with shawls. Some poorer women can be seen wearing masculine flat caps.

The class divide among these employees is noticeably wider than in some other factory gate films. While some of the women are relatively well-dressed, the poorer ones among them aren't hard to spot by their worn clothes.
