Overview

Mr Croxson of Norwich used the title ‘Norvic Films’ for the short films he made with his 9.5mm camera in the 1930s. Here he captured The Heigham Conservative Ladies Bowls Club in competition near the Gibraltar Gardens pub beside the River Wensum in Norwich. A huge lawn roller is used to prepare the green. During play, the walking from end to end of the green provides the chance for members to enjoy a chat.

For local bowling clubs, the use of the green for formal competitions needs to be planned and scheduled. To encourage new members, and help people meet one another and test their skills, ‘Spoons’ refers to a more informal competition which can be entered without advance notice by just turning up. Spoons have also been a traditional bowling prize.
