Overview
A family stays at the famous Greenbank Hotel. The hotel has been at the seafront in Falmouth since it was built in 1640. In the eighteenth century packet ship captains used to reside here while ashore and famous guests to have stayed here include the social reformer and founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale and former secretary of the Bank of England and Wind in the Willows author Kenneth Grahame.
The Fal and Carrick Roads are a flooded river valley or ria with many creeks and inlets. Falmouth Port is well known for being one of the deepest natural harbours in the world and an important stop for passing shipping and has a long history of shipbuilding and ship repairs. It is still known for its chandlery or marine stores. The area is also a haven for watersports such as sailing, water-skiing and general boating. The New Roseland was a passenger ferry run out of St Mawes opposite Falmouth by the St Mawes Steam Tug and Passenger Company until 1969. The Merchant Vessel Acclivity was launched in 1929 as the Atheltarn but renamed after the first F T Everard's Acclivity sank in 1952.
