Orange Day
Ulsterβs loyalists on the march, on the final 12th July of the World War One years.
Overview
Ulsterβs loyalists flex their muscles on their annual 12th July parade, the last to take place during World War One. They are captured on film by newsreel Gaumont Graphic. Turbulent events in Ireland were a recurring newsreel subject; the 12th being an annual event, cameras could confidently be dispatched in advance. A shot of Orangemen parading Belfastβs streets is followed by leading Unionist politicians addressing crowds.
Lord Londonderry, who had an extensive recent war record, is seen first, followed by Sir Edward Carson whose famously dramatic oratory is evident even without the benefit of sound.
