Buy more Premium Bonds and maybe your ship will come in - it has for lucky winners Mr and Mrs Shum

Advert 1958 1 mins

Overview

Buy more Premium Bonds and "maybe your ship will come in". Mr and Mrs Shum are the lucky stars of this advert, having just returned from a four week holiday in Madeira – thanks to winning Β£500 from Mr Shum's Premium Bonds holdings. This princely win would be worth more than Β£10,000 today.

This is one in a series of TV adverts made to promote Premium Savings Bonds, which were still relatively new, having been launched in 1956. The government-guaranteed bonds were unveiled by Harold Macmillan and soon became popular. Each Β£1 bond purchased qualified for a monthly draw with a top prize of Β£1,000. Premium Bonds are now held by more than a third of the UK population, and the monthly prizes range in value from Β£25 - Β£1,000,000.
