Overview

A special parade, ceremony and luncheon is held in Merthyr in recognition of the outstanding contribution to miners’ working lives made by Arthur Lewis Horner, a communist trade union leader. Horner was President of the South Wales Miners Federation 1936-46 and, from 1946-59, General Secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers. On his retirement he was awarded the Freedom of the borough he was born and brought up in.
