Overview
The Scillonian III is under construction in a dry dock of Appledore Shipyard in Devon. RMV Scillonian III will be a passenger ferry based in Penzance, Cornwall. It will join the Scillonian family which has carried tourists and islanders alike across the edge of English Channel and Celtic Sea from Penzance to St Mary's Harbour since the 1920s. It is run by the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company.
Scillonian III was launched on 5 May 1977 and named by Prince Charles, Duke of Cornwall twelve days after launch. The ship entered into service two days after that and is still in service and one of only four ships still to carry the status of Royal Mail Ship so RMV meaning Royal Mail Vessel. The ship has a capacity to carry four hundred and eighty-five passengers and measures 6 metres in length and weighs 1,255 tons and travels at a service speed of 15 knots.
