Overview

Home movie of a family at Sheringham beach, on the north Norfolk coast in 1957. The children spend time playing; digging in the sand and splashing about in the sea with Dad. Also on the beach, a crowd gathers to watch the return of the RNLB Forester’s Centenary lifeboat with crew to the boathouse. Later the children enjoy spending time in the playground, on the roundabout and enjoying a push on the swings.

The Standard 8mm colour film was donated to the East Anglian Film Archive by Professor Leighton of Linton, Cambridgeshire. The RNLB Forester’s Centenary lifeboat is now retired, having been stationed at Sheringham between 1936 and 1961, that’s some 25 years. Today the lifeboat is exhibited fully restored in Sheringham museum. In 1957 the lifeboat was brought into action on five occasions, and saved a total of 8 lives in the same year.
