Close To You
Simmering apprehensions surround a family get-together as Elliot Page’s Sam returns home for the first time since transitioning, in this highly collaborative feature.
Director: Dominic Savage
Overview
An aging father’s birthday party gathers the grown-up children back into the fold, bringing with it a particular sense of dread for recently transitioned Sam (Elliot Page). In Page’s first major film role since coming out as trans in 2020, we feel his character armouring himself on the train to the suburbs. Although warmly welcomed, misgendering and misunderstandings are only a breath away. In town, he runs into Katherine, the closest of his friends when he was growing up, with whom he had lost touch. A kindred spirit couldn’t have come at a better time for both. Based on a story by Dominic Savage and Elliot Page, Close To You is an intensely naturalistic drama that’s become the hallmark of director Dominic Savage’s previous work Love + Hate, The Escape and most recently the double BAFTA winning I Am Ruth starring Kate Winslet.
