Spring Comes to England
Farming techniques and modern methods bring new crops to market.
Overview
The farmer is bringing modern crops to town. See flower farming on the Scilly Isles, where the hedges grow high to protect the crop from harsh winds; Cornwall's cauliflower crop, where seaweed makes excellent manure, and the Lea Valley, where 10,000 acres of crop are nurtured under glass at a research station. There are new crops in the offing too, such as the Chestnut Early Giant Lettuce, mushrooms from Chislehurst and new techniques being developed in Walton-on-Thames. Welcome to England in the spring!
This government film is a public record, preserved and presented by the BFI National Archive on behalf of The National Archives, home to more than 1,000 years of British history.
