Burns Cottage and Memorial
A scenic tour of the Ayrshire birthplace of Scotland's beloved bard.
Overview
Join the literary tourists of the 1920s for a visit to the Ayrshire home of Scotland's beloved national bard, Robert Burns. The scenic tour begins at the 'auld cley biggin', the thatched cottage where Burns spent his early years, before taking in the nearby monument and gardens and the medieval Brig o' Doon, featured in the poem Tam o' Shanter - and seen here thronged with summertime visitors.
The footage, shot by newsreel company Topical Budget, is production material, which would have been edited to fit Topical's usual 60-90-second format (sadly the finished item appears to be lost). Following a fairly long spell as an ale house, Burns Cottage was acquired by the Alloway Burns Monument Trustees in 1881, who restored the building and opened it to the paying public. The cottage, along with the other sites seen here, is now part of the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum.
