Congregation Leaving All Saints Church, Blackburn (c.1903)

Dressed to the nines, a Lancashire congregation leaves church in Nova Scotia, Blackburn.

Non-Fiction 1903 2 mins Silent

Overview

This seems to have been shot on a blustery day: many of the congregation members carry furled umbrellas, while the women's usual Sunday finery (much more obviously on display in other Mitchell and Kenyon churchgoing films) is concealed under overcoats, with only their hats on show. The men wear three distinct types of headgear (top hats, bowlers, cloth caps) indicating their social status.

Formerly on Bolton Road in the Nova Scotia district of Lancashire, All Saints Church opened in 1872 and closed in 1991. The building has since been demolished.
