Cumberland and the Lake District

Join newlyweds James and Audrey St Clair on their Lake District honeymoon, with breathtaking views and no mint cake in sight.

Travelogue 1926 18 mins Silent

Overview

The Lakes are as fine a place for a honeymoon as anywhere in the world - though the rain-free weather seen in this 1920s promotional travelogue is hardly guaranteed. Despite their detailed introduction, the newlyweds - "staid" James and his "young and irresponsible wifey", Audrey - are very much on the margins of the stunning views that make up the majority of the film.

The fluctuating image throughout is caused by decomposition of the film print, which is sadly irreversible - the photographic emulsion has melted away.
