England V. South Africa Test Match, 15th, 17th, And 18th June 1935
England welcome the South African cricket team to Trent Bridge for the first Test
Overview
South African fast bowler Bob Crisp gives new meaning to 'slip' in cricket when he takes a fall on his first delivery. It was an inauspicious start to the first Test of the series at Trent Bridge, played on 15, 17 and 18 June 1935. The suffering continued for South Africa, with England's openers Herbert Sutcliffe and Bob Wyatt achieving an impressive opening partnership of 118. Although the camera focus in this amateur footage is a bit on the soft side, we get a wonderful demonstration of cricketing skills and some of the fast bowling in particular looks very impressive.
As South Africa were forced to follow on it looked as if England might be on their way to victory, until rain made play impossible on the third day and the match ended a draw. South Africa went on to win the next Test at Lord's, their first win in a Test series in England. The remaining three Tests were drawn, leaving South Africa winners of the series by 1-0.
