Another Year
Mike Leigh's drama about contented couple (Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen) who play host to various friends, each struggling to find happiness.
Director: Mike Leigh
Overview
Mike Leigh's drama moves with the seasons yet stays firmly rooted in the everyday domestic upheavals of projects past. It centres on Tom (Jim Broadbent) and Gerri (Ruth Sheen), the happy couple with an assortment of visitors whose lives provide delight, despair and reflection.
Among them is Mary (a Morrissey lyric made flesh, and played by Lesley Manville) and the more rounded Ken, whose missed chances and bad choices resonate thanks to Peter Wight's superb, haunting performance. Another Year gained an Oscar nomination and won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the Cannes Film Festival 2010.
