Drama 1961 93 mins

Director: Roy Ward Baker

Overview

A brilliantly performed social drama made in the wake of 1959’s Notting Hill riots. A trade union boss opposes the petty prejudices of his union when a black colleague stands for nomination. Director Roy Ward Baker and screenwriter Ted Willis paint a stark picture of early 1960s integration, with characters Gomez (Earl Cameron) and Sonny (Johnny Sekka) battling to overcome the colour bars in work and love against a background of hostility and intolerance. John Mills is superb as the idealist union leader forced to confront his own biased attitudes when his daughter (Sylvia Sims) brings her West Indian boyfriend home.
