For Colored Girls
An ensemble cast including Janet Jackson and Whoopi Goldberg bring to life Ntozake Shange's extraordinary 1975 play about the experiences of black women.
Director: Tyler Perry
Overview
Tyler Perry brings to Ntozake Shange's extraordinary 1975 play about the experiences of black women. Shange's experimental drama of poetic monologues, based around the testimonies of seven women of colour (literally βLady in Redβ, βLady in Brownβ, etc), is reinterpreted for cinema with interspersed dramatic interludes that bring humanity to Shange's piercing verse.
Exploring a number of various life-changing issues that can affect all women, from infidelity to abortion and rape, Perryβs impassioned film showcases a parade of powerful performances from its ensemble cast, which includes Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, Thandie Newton, Loretta Devine and Kerry Washington.
