The Sailor's Return
Fascinating tale, set in 19th century Dorset, of an African woman who faces prejudice when she falls in love with an Englishman.
Director: Jack Gold
Overview
Set in Victorian Dorset, this is a beautiful, rarely-told story about a young African woman who comes to Britain for love. Running a pub with her English husband, Princess Tulip (a wonderful performance from Shope Shodeinde) faces prejudice and bigotry in her new village. This handsome adaptation of the 1925 novel by David Garnett, with a fine supporting performance from Tom Bell, was made for cinemas but originally shown on TV.
