The Shout 15 rating

Cannes’ Grand Jury Prize was awarded to this unnerving drama about a man who claims to be able to kill people with a ‘terror shout’ learned from an Aboriginal shaman.

Drama 1978 83 mins

Director: Jerzy Skolimowski

Overview

Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski’s second UK-set film (following Deep End) stars Alan Bates as a man who claims to be able to kill people with a ‘terror shout’ learned from an Aboriginal shaman. John Hurt and Susannah York play the couple whose lives he invades.

This early producing credit for Jeremy Thomas is notable for its eerie use of the bleak Devon coastline. The Shout was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival and won the Grand Jury Prize at the same festival.
