Overview
Uli Edel's adaptation of Hubert Selby Jr.'s novel follows a gang of young hoodlums, a down-and-out call girl, an alcoholic father, and a low-level union official as they attempt to survive in the underbelly of lower-class 1950s Brooklyn. This uncompromising but powerful look at life on the dark side was hailed by the New York Times and memorably described as "harrowing" yet "savagely beautiful."
