Football Cup 5th Round: A Clashing of Blades

It's the FA Cup fifth round and arch-rivals Sheffield United and The Wednesday cross swords for Steel City bragging rights.

Overview

Sheffield United and The Wednesday cross swords at Hillsborough in the FA Cup fifth round. The Wednesday were hoping for their first Steel City derby win since 1919. United, meanwhile, had spent years looking down on their bitter rivals from a loftier position in Division One, but were now facing a rapidly improving Wednesday. It's tricky to tell the two teams apart in this black and white newsreel film. United apparently wore shirts with collars - and so are probably the team starting on the left. The replay was won by United, 4-1.

The Wednesday, or Sheffield Wednesday, as they were officially called from 1929, had only been back in the top Division since 1926 but would go on to win the league title in both the 1928-29 and 1929-30 seasons.
