New Way of Caring

An in-house training film designed to explain the NHS' 1973 reorganisation to its staff.

Documentary 1973 21 mins

Overview

The NHS Reorganisation Act 1973 was the biggest shakeup of health provision since the service's establishment in 1948. The changes saw the administration of hospitals, family practitioners and personal health brought together into a unified structure for the first time. The benefits of this streamlining is conveyed in this NHS training film which plays out the effects on a fictional Mrs Jensen, after she has a nasty fall. Under the old system the administrative jumble lets her down, but we're shown how the new inter-connected system will get Mrs Jensen back on her feet much quicker.

This government film is a public record, preserved and presented by the BFI National Archive on behalf of The National Archives, home to more than 1,000 years of British history.
