Wembley Bound!
The short-lived minnows Wigan Borough F.C. take on the mighty Sheffield Wednesday in the third round of the FA Cup.
Overview
Sheffield Wednesday (in the lighter stripes) were flying high in the First Division when they visited lowly Wigan Borough F.C. in the FA Cup third round. The teams are greeted by a record crowd and Wednesday's boy mascot - who looks a bit lost - at the hastily-extended Springfield Park. Although no goals are seen, Topical Budget's newsreel cameraman captures the frenetic pace of play and the pressure on Wednesday's keeper. The home team put up a great fight, but Wednesday's superior skill won the day, 3-1.
Wigan Borough F.C. is not to be confused with the current league team Wigan Athletic. The short-lived Wigan Borough F.C. started life as Wigan United in 1919 and settled on Wigan Borough F.C. after a couple of early name changes. They were one of the original teams of the Third Division North, which started in 1920. The 1928-29 season was to be their best ever, with a fourth place in the Third Division North and the advancement to the third round of the FA Cup. But the club folded in 1931 due to financial difficulties.
