Overview
A day to remember: after winning at Wembley on 23/4/1927 – 1-0 against Arsenal – the Cardiff City football team return home and receive a heroes’ welcome on 25/4. Never before or since has the FA Cup been won by a Welsh team. They are received by the Lord Mayor, Alderman William Gray, at the City Hall and Hughie Ferguson, the scorer of the controversial goal, holds the trophy aloft, the crowd waving handkerchiefs and hats.
Thousands had been present at Wembley to see the Welsh win but thousands more listened to the commentary as it was relayed live to those massed outside Cardiff’s City Hall. The team consisted of Jimmy Nelson, Tom Farquharson, Tom Watson, George McLachlan, Tom Sloan, Sam Irving, Fred Keenor (captain), Billy Hardy, Len Davies, Ernie Curtis, and Hughie Ferguson, a notable Scottish player (Motherwell) who had joined Cardiff City in 1925 and became a record-making goal scorer. The cup final goal, in the last five minutes of the match, was considered controversial as it was knocked in by the Arsenal goalkeeper’s elbow, after he appeared to have saved it. Cardiff City went on to win the Welsh Cup that season too.
