Camwell Personal Film No. 47: Wales and Scotland

A journey through the Valleys on the LNWR line from Nantybwch to Risca and the SLS/RCTS Scottish Rail Tour Week.

Amateur film 1960 12 mins Silent

Overview

Through the lens of renowned railway enthusiast William Arthur 'Cam' Camwell, we begin our journey at Nantybwch on the LNWR Heads of the Valleys line. Then it's on through Tredegar, Markham Village, Blackwood and Pontllanfraith, into a forlorn looking Risca GW station, which has a piece missing from the station name board!

In 1960, Cam travelled north to Scotland for the SLS/RCTS Scottish Rail Tour Week, pausing at York to take in the heritage-liveried North Eastern J72 locomotive No. 68736 working as station pilot, and the Easingwold Railway. Cam stayed in Scotland for the whole week of steam specials and his camera reveals the locomotives of the week: Gordon Highlander, Glen Douglas, Midland 2P No. 40663 and Highland Railway No. 103. He even stayed an extra day to record an additional special train on the White Cockade Rail Tour, capturing No. 61995 Cameron of Lochiel at Fort William.
