Camwell Personal Film No. 40: Ribblehead

A thinly disguised visit to the Stainmore Line, taking in the impressive tubular viaducts of Belah and Deepdale

Amateur film 1959 4 mins Silent

Overview

A visit to Ribblehead on the Settle to Carlisle line is really a teaser for the nearby Stainmore Line. 'Cam' Camwell's trips were always well planned and a small roll of film often recorded a varied tour, taking in a great number of locations. Kirkby Stephen, Clifton Moor, Barras, Aisgill, the impressive tubular viaducts of Belah and Deepdale and Stainmore Summit are all featured here. Many of the railways in this film have now disappeared without trace - by 1959, when this film record was taken, the writing was on the wall for the Stainmore Line and it was closed three years later.
