Overview

The combined south Wales shows seen here – those of Peterston-super-Ely, Pontypridd, Rumney, Aberdare & District and Whitchurch - have it all: spectacular refusals by show jumping horses; the hammer and sickle of the USSR flying alongside the Union Jack, horses and drays, a merry-go-round, and wonderful fancy-dress costumes worn by riders in a parade on horseback (included is a terrier in costume).

The life of these shows has been caught on camera by Reginald George Iles, a founder member of the South Wales and Monmouthshire Agricultural and Horse Shows Association and its official film-maker (he would show the films during the winter months). He worked in the Bonus Department of Imperial Tobacco, Cardiff, and his two daughters were keen horsewomen, both going on to breed horses.
