Another Sky
Two cultures collide in a beautifully photographed love story - an ode to Morocco, its music, its people and way of life.
Director: Gavin Lambert
Overview
It's impossible not to be moved by the blissful awakening of Rose's passion for a Moroccan street musician. But the fling between them, facilitated by Rose's guide, takes a punishing turn when Tayeb mysteriously disappears. Gavin Lambert's only film celebrates a vibrant culture filled with light, music, colours and seemingly impenetrable traditions at odds with its dull upper class European visitors.
Born in Sussex and educated in Oxford, Gavin Lambert wore many hats during his career; he was a renowned novelist, screenwriter and film critic, editing Sight and Sound from 1949 to 1955. He was associated with Lindsey Anderson and later, after moving to Los Angeles, Nicholas Ray, with whom he co-wrote and co-directed Bigger than Life. Lambert lived in Morocco himself a few years after directing Another Sky. His directing debut was so promising, it's a real shame he didn't go on to make more films. The beauty of Another Sky is also largely thanks to the superb cinematography of Walter Lassally, then at the very beginning of his long and successful career.
