Half of a Yellow Sun 15 rating

Thandie Newton and Chiwetel Ejiofor star in the acclaimed adaption of the Orange Prize-winning novel.

              Drama 2014 111 mins

              Director: Biyi Bandele-Thomas

              Overview

Olanna (Thandie Newton) and Kainene (Anika Noni Rose) are strikingly beautiful middle-class twins in newly independent Nigeria. Their fractious relationship is typified by their very different choices of lovers – Olanna’s partner is a radical professor Odenigbo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) while Kainene’s lover Richard (Joseph Mawle) is an English writer. But their rivalries are set aside as they become swept up in the turbulence of the Nigerian civil war, throwing them together and violently tearing them apart in ways they could have never imagined.

Nigerian writer and director Biyi Bandele’s excellent feature debut is an astute adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s highly acclaimed novel of the same name, which won the Orange Prize for fiction in 2007. The film played at the BFI London Film Festival in 2013.
