Overview
A cadre of crooked cops agree to pull off a heist on behalf of the Russian mob, using the killing of a rookie officer (police radio code ‘999’) as a decoy. But their supposed patsy (Casey Affleck) might not be as naïve as they hoped.
Affleck leads a seriously heavyweight cast, including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Woody Harrelson, Kate Winslet (as a Russian mobster) and Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, in this stylish and serpentine neo-noir from director John Hillcoat (The Road, The Proposition, Lawless). Hillcoat brings the style and emotional depth seen in his previous films to bear on the thriller genre, combining tenets of both the modern action/heist flick and the more studied, 1970s-style corrupt-cop drama. With its noirish imagery and utter moral blackness, where the line between good and evil is not so much blurred as mercilessly extinguished, Triple 9 is an uncompromising and unforgettable crime saga.
