              Overview

Natalie Portman is exceptional as the iconic First Lady who has to quickly adjust to the world-shaking trauma of her husband’s assassination. Framed around Jackie’s candid confessions to a reporter some months later, we witness with glacial precision the events of 22 November 1963 and its aftermath, as Jackie is immediately swirled into a maelstrom of political manoeuvring and security procedures.

Enthrallingly recreated by the brilliant Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín (in his first English-language film), Jackie upends the traditions of biopic storytelling with its fractured narrative and an obsessive focus on mood and minutiae. Portman’s adroitly textured, career-best performance is clearly the star turn, but she’s complemented by fine supporting turns from Peter Sarsgaard, Billy Crudup and, in one of his final roles, the late John Hurt as Kennedy’s eminently philosophical priest and confidante.
