The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears 18 rating

Another giallo-inspired exercise in operatic violence from Belgian duo Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani, directors of the acclaimed Amer.

Horror 2013 102 mins

Director: Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani

Overview

Following Amer, their acclaimed love letter to Italian giallo, Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani return to psychedelic 1970s Euro-horror with another visceral exercise in operatic violence and perverse eroticism. Following the disappearance of his wife, a man enters a web of intrigue as he tries to uncover her whereabouts. Traversing the labyrinthine halls of his apartment building, he encounters inhabitants whose tales of sensuality and sadism play out before him.

From its gloriously evocative title to its visionary execution, this is a gift to fans of exploitation cinema, although its influences aren’t just confined to cult cinema – echoes of Jan Švankmajer and Roman Polanski are also identifiable. With an unconventional approach to narrative, Cattet and Forzani have created a sensory, dream-like experience, often forgoing dialogue in favour of instinctual storytelling, pitched to perfection and delivering devious surprises with every blood-splattered frame.
