Now best known for a string of hugely successful documentaries (Amy, Senna, Maradona), director Asif Kapdia burst on the scene with this hugely confident dramatic debut, shot on location in Rajasthan, which won a BAFTA for Best British Film. The influence of both Japanese samurai stories and the Western is apparent in this saga of a warrior (Irfan Khan) who decides to eschew violence and depart the arid plains of north-west India for his native village in the Himalayas.
