Walerian Borowczyk

Controversial, iconoclastic and erotic, the works of Walerian Borowczyk have inspired censure and acclaim in equal measure.

Having first established himself in Poland as a hugely influential animator, Borowczyk enraged the authorities with his second feature, Goto - Island of Love, which depicted a crumbling dictatorship.

Reestablishing himself in France, he made his name with a series of brilliant but controversial works - Blanche, The Beast, Immoral Tales - until a late-career dip bestowed him with an unfair reputation as a pornographer.

His work has since been reappraised. A series of remastered re-releases cast his films in a new light, highlighting once unheralded pieces such as the surrealist masterpiece, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Miss Osbourne.

With Borowczyk's reputation now rightfully restored we can admire the provocative vision of this master of sensuous cinema.
