A single mother desperately tries to shield her daughter from hidden terrors in her apartment block, in Hideo Nakata's chilling masterpiece.

Horror 2002 101 mins

Director: Hideo Nakata

Overview

Based upon on a short story by Ring author Koji Suzuki, Dark Water follows Yoshimi, a single mother struggling to win sole custody of her only child, Ikuko. When they move into a new home within a dilapidated and long-forgotten apartment complex, Yoshimi begins to experience startling visions and unexplainable sounds, calling her mental well-being into question, and endangering not only her custody of Ikuko, but perhaps their lives as well.

Nakata followed his breakout horror hit Ring (1998), which kickstarted an entire Asian horror movement ('J-Horror'), with this even more accomplished chiller. Both films would eventually be remade in Hollywood, but the terrors of the originals could never be matched.

With Dark Water Nakata successfully merges spine-tingling tension with a family’s heart-wrenching emotional struggle, to create one of the very finest and most unsettling contemporary Japanese horror films.
