"The way we're playing I don't want to see an awful lot of them". Typically blunt words from Brian Clough as his team prepare for a visit by Leeds United.

Overview

The Brian Clough and Don Revie rivalry was at the centre of the 2009 feature film 'The Damned United'. The facts may have been slightly tweaked for that dramatic work but here we get a chance to hear from Derby's manager, Brian Clough, at the start of the battle with his opposite number at Leeds United. Clough, not long into his managerial career with unfashionable Derby County, was playing the chasing game at this point.

Mr Revie did indeed manage to "work his lads into a fever": Derby lost by four goals to two over two legs in their January 1968 League Cup semi final fixture against Leeds United. Leeds went on to win the trophy by beating Arsenal. In between their two League Cup legs Derby also found time to lose to Leeds in the FA Cup.
